To celebrate Pat Cosgrave’s birthday, today’s rewind looks back at his 2016 Magnolia Stakes success with Our Channel.
William Haggas’ gelding had shown promise in handicap company which led to the trainer taking the gamble of landing some black type.
The five-year-old had competed at Group level as a three-year-old, running in the Derby before crossing the Atlantic Sea to compete in the American Derby a month later.
Our Channel was gelded in the summer of 2015 and the operation brought out a new lease of life in him.
He was seriously competitive in handicaps during the winter months, winning two of his four starts including a Class 2 Handicap over 10 furlongs at Kempton.
Haggas sent the five-year-old back to the Sunbury-on-Thames course three weeks later for the Magnolia Stakes and partnered him up with Cosgrave.
The gelding tracked the leading Noble Gift throughout the contest and produced a challenge at two furlongs out.
Cosgrove kicked his mount on and he responded, as he just pushed in front in the final strides to claim success by a neck.
It would be the final time Our Channel would land victory on a racecourse, before sadly passing away two years later at the age of seven.
