GROUP 2 KING GEORGE QATAR STAKES: Dragon Symbol bids to overturn bridesmaid status at Goodwood

Archie Watson’s stable-star Dragon Symbol drops back to five furlongs for a crack at Battaash at Goodwood

2G40FR0 Dragon Symbol ridden by Oisin Murphy looks on after crossing the line first in the Commonwealth Cup, however the decision was overturned in favour of Campanelle (not pictured) ridden by Frankie Dettori following a stewards enquiry during day four of Royal Ascot at Ascot Racecourse. Picture date: Friday June 18, 2021.

Previous Sunbury-on-Thames winner Dragon Symbol will clash with four-time champion Battaash at Glorious Goodwood on Friday afternoon, aiming for a first win since May after a trio of silver medalist appearances.

Archie Watson’s colt has not finished outside of the top two on his seven career starts to date, finding one too good at Haydock Park, Royal Ascot and Newmarket, respectively.

However, he’s been desperately unlucky on occasions, and given that his debut was only back in March, is a very progressive son of Cable Bay who could be worth chancing to dethrone the five-time hunting Charles Hills gelding.

The Dark Angel seven-year-old set a track record in this contest twelve months ago and followed that up with a facile success in the Nunthorpe at York a month later.

His reappearance was not until the defence of his King’s Stands crown in Berkshire when he could only muster fourth, but he is likely to strip fitter for that and will not give up his trophy without a fight.

The Qatar Stakes, worth £300,000, is the feature contest at Goodwood this Friday

Kevin Ryan’s Glass Slippers makes her seasonal debut her after winning at the Breeders Cup in November, with recent July Cup fourth Art Power also backing down in trip.
