Festival Guide

The Christmas Festival at Kempton Park Racecourse is amongst the most highly-anticipated jump racing meetings on the National Hunt racing calendar.

This magnificent two-day affair takes place on Boxing Day and the 27th of December just after Christmas every year and features some incredibly prestigious races like The Kauto Star Novices’ Steeple Chase, The Ladbrokes Christmas Hurdle, the Desert Orchid Steeple Chase and, of course, The King George VI Steeple Chase.

Kempton Park Racecourse is the marvellous host of this spectacular occasion, based on the outskirts of Greater London just inside the County of Surrey. The racecourse, which was opened way back in 1878, now features an all-weather track and excellent floodlighting facilities to allow for various forms of horse racing all year round.

The National Hunt racecourse itself is a triangular circuit that stretches 1 mile and 5 furlongs, which is practically flat and features a 220-yard run-in. The floodlit all-weather track can be either 8 or 10 furlongs depending on whether the inside or outside bend is used.

The Christmas Festival 2021 is scheduled to take place on Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th of December this Christmas.

King George VI Chase Day

The first day of The Christmas Festival at Kempton Park Racecourse is known as King George VI Chase Day and it features The Grade 1 King George VI Steeple Chase, The Christmas Hurdle and four other wonderful National Hunt races.

Around four-hundred and thirty thousand pounds is available in prize money on this day alone, verifying the significance of this extraordinary day of racing.

The King George VI Chase is the featured race of the day. This race is widely regarded to be the second most prestigious steeplechase in National Hunt horse racing behind The Cheltenham Gold Cup, offering a purse worth over £200,000.
